The Kansas City Intermodal Terminal (KCIT) is the fourth facility the company has inaugurated since 2021, aimed at expanding its intermodal network in the United States.

Union Pacific Railroad has opened its newest intermodal terminal in Kansas City, Kansas. Located near major highways and interstates, KCIT will handle both domestic and international containerised shipments, including grains, consumer goods, refrigerated products, and automotive components.

The terminal is designed to increase local capacity and includes two paved parking lots, additional working tracks, and precision gate technology for automated truck entry and exit.

Union Pacific plans to transfer its KCIT domestic service origin point in Southern California from the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility in Long Beach to the City of Industry terminal. The change is intended to reduce transit times by more than 25%, with an estimated 25-hour saving on the route to Kansas City, operating six days a week on the company’s expedited premium network.

The shift to City of Industry is expected to improve market access, drayage efficiency, and logistics coordination while complementing KCIT’s role in connecting Midwest shippers to Union Pacific’s wider network.
