The company, which operates in 18 European countries, aims to improve the efficiency of its logistics services while adapting to changing market demands.

DB Cargo is undergoing a transformation designed to streamline its operations and enhance its ability to handle cross-border rail freight across Europe.

Currently, over 60% of DB Cargo’s freight trains cross at least one national border, making it a key player in the transportation of raw materials, consumer goods, and finished products across Europe. The transformation aims to optimize the flow of goods and improve the company's ability to provide logistics solutions tailored to the needs of businesses operating across national borders.

12 national companies integrate into a single decentralized network

The restructuring involves the integration of twelve national companies into a single decentralized network, focusing on local management while ensuring that operational decisions are made closer to the regional markets they serve. This move is expected to improve flexibility and streamline decision-making processes, allowing DB Cargo to respond more effectively to the varying demands of different regions.

Changes in individual countries

In terms of operational changes, DB Cargo is implementing several initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

  • In Sweden, the company will begin using in-house train drivers, which is expected to improve flexibility in operations.
  • In France, DB Cargo is expanding its intermodal offerings and developing combined transport solutions to support the growing demand for multimodal logistics.
  • In Switzerland, DB Cargo will take over cross-border transit services to Italy starting in 2026, managing the operations directly under its own management.
  • In Denmark, DB Cargo has established a dedicated maintenance depot for its Scandinavian fleet. This will allow the company to return trains to service more quickly, improving fleet availability and reducing downtime.

Transformation aims at improvement of services

The transformation is aimed at creating synergies, increasing operational efficiency, and improving service quality across DB Cargo's European network. The company’s approach focuses on adapting to the logistical needs of modern industries while maintaining local expertise and responsibility in each national market. Through these changes, DB Cargo intends to maintain its role as a major player in European rail freight logistics, supporting the movement of goods across borders with greater efficiency and sustainability.
