China's rail freight connection with Europe continues to expand, with 14,689 trains operating between January and September this year.

According to China State Railway Group, the connection with Europe recorded a 13% increase compared to the same period last year. These trains transported a total of 1.57 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo, reflecting an 11% year-on-year growth.

In September alone, 1,633 trains made the journey, carrying 171,000 TEUs of goods. The monthly number of China-Europe rail freight trips has exceeded 1,600 for seven consecutive months since January.

The railway operator has been focusing on increasing throughput at ports and transportation channels while improving clearance efficiency. Efforts have also been directed toward participating in the development of the cross-Caspian Sea international transport corridor. Currently, China-Europe freight trains serve 226 cities across 25 European countries.

In addition to the China-Europe routes, the China-Laos railway has handled 10 million tonnes of cross-border freight as of September 16 since commencing operations in December 2021, according to customs data, New Silk Road Discovery reports. Highlighting growing trade links, the first batch of fresh bananas from Laos arrived in Beijing via cold chain logistics on October 20.
