New unloading method aims to streamline the process, significantly cutting down the time needed to unload various types of scrap metal.

DB Cargo, in collaboration with SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar and logistics partner Innofreight, is testing a new method for unloading scrap metal at the Dillinger Hafen. The innovative use of a rotating loading stacker to tip scrap metal offers a promising alternative to traditional unloading methods involving cranes and magnets. This development comes as the steel industry continues to seek greener practices, with steel scrap playing a pivotal role in reducing emissions.

The rotating loading stacker enables faster and more efficient handling, potentially setting a new standard for scrap logistics on the rail. This method aligns with the steel industry's growing emphasis on sustainability and recycling, as scrap metal is a key component in eco-friendly steel production.

German government has announced a significant funding plan to support the green transformation of steel mills in Saarland. Economy Minister Robert Habeck confirmed at the end of 2023 the allocation of €2.6 billion to aid the transition towards zero-emission steelmaking. This funding is aimed at the state's primary steel operations—Dillinger Hütte, Saarstahl, and their joint pig iron plant Rogesa, all part of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar.

The investment will support the construction of new facilities designed to utilize hydrogen and electric arc furnaces, as well as increase the use of recycled steel scrap. The project targets the production of up to 3.5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2027/2028.
