RIVE Private Investment, an independent European investment firm specializing in transportation assets and energy transition, has acquired a majority stake in Northrail.
Northrail, based in Hamburg, Germany, manages a fleet of 450 rolling stock assets, valued at approximately 1.5 billion euros. The transaction was executed through RIVE’s RIVE Transportation Assets Income Fund (RTAIF), which now owns 91.75% of Northrail shares. The remaining 8.25% are indirectly owned by Northrail’s CEO, Volker Simmering, who retains his minority stake post-transaction.
The acquisition is expected to extend the existing partnership between RIVE and Northrail, enhancing the latter’s leasing business and supporting its geographical expansion. RIVE plans to invest in new vehicle technologies for both freight and passenger segments, contributing to the modernization and efficiency of the rail sector.
Northrail’s fleet includes a variety of locomotives and passenger trains, from electric and hybrid models to traditional shunting locomotives. The company offers tailored leasing services and organizes the maintenance of leased vehicles, ensuring a comprehensive service for its clients.
This acquisition aligns with RIVE’s ESG strategy, supporting the European Union’s decarbonization goals by 2030. By investing in critical transportation assets, RIVE aims to accelerate the modal shift from road to rail, fostering a more sustainable transport infrastructure in Europe.
Founded in 2013, RIVE Private Investment has financed over 2.4 billion euros of assets across more than 100 transactions in around 20 countries. Through its RTAIF fund, RIVE focuses on assets that contribute to decarbonizing the transport sector, including rail, specialized aviation, and maritime projects. Since its launch in mid-2021, RTAIF has deployed nearly 300 million euros of capital in 10 countries.
Northrail, one of Europe’s leading rolling stock leasing providers and asset managers, continues to develop innovative rolling stock investments. The company’s portfolio includes electric, dual-mode, hybrid locomotives, and battery-powered regional trains, supporting both freight and passenger transport across Europe.
