FS Logistix has launched its first “smart train” for operational testing on the Milan–Catania Bicocca route. The project, managed by Mercitalia Intermodal in collaboration with Mercitalia Rail, starts real-world trials of a wireless communication system linking onboard wagon sensors with the driver.

Functions under testing include continuous brake system monitoring, load stability control, automatic train composition verification and derailment detection.

The deployment follows the installation of the WaggonTracker digital system across part of Mercitalia Intermodal’s fleet. An additional 180 wagons are scheduled to be equipped with the smart train technology during 2025, bringing the number of digitalised wagons to around 700.

The smart train programme forms part of FS Logistix’s fleet modernisation plan. The technology is intended to reduce train preparation times, support predictive maintenance and limit downtime linked to unplanned maintenance interventions.
