Siemens Mobility will increase the share of CO₂-reduced “green steel” in its rail vehicle production through an expanded partnership with voestalpine.

Siemens Mobility has signed a new agreement with voestalpine to significantly increase the volume of 'green steel' used in its rail vehicle production. Under the deal, around 20 percent of the steel Siemens will source in 2025 will come from voestalpine’s CO₂-reduced Greentec Steel Edition, with the option to procure additional volumes in the following three years.

The cooperation builds on the “Green Steel for Bogies” pilot project launched in 2022 at Siemens Mobility’s global bogie competence center in Graz. The facility produces roughly 3,000 bogies per year, and the share of low-emission steel in their construction will now be steadily expanded.

"By increasing the use of green steel, we are making a significant contribution to the sustainability of the railway industry. At the same time, this strengthens our competitiveness and resilience and consolidates our pioneering role as a provider of sustainable mobility solutions," said Andreas Mehlhorn, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Mobility.

According to voestalpine, steel from the Greentec Steel Edition production route can reduce emissions by up to 70 percent compared to conventional steelmaking. Siemens Mobility already uses CO₂-reduced material in bogies, locomotives and passenger coaches, and plans further increases as part of its corporate climate strategy.

The company aims to reduce CO₂e emissions from its own operations by 90 percent by fiscal year 2030, and to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. Expanding the use of climate-friendly steel is seen as a key element in achieving these objectives and further strengthening rail as the most sustainable mode of transport.

In September, voestalpine issued a GHG emissions certificate for steel supplied so far, ensuring full transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain.
