Alstom has awarded Knorr-Bremse a contract to supply braking, coupling and air conditioning systems for up to 90 Adessia Stream suburban trains ordered for operators VRR and go.Rheinland in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.
The scope covers trains in nine- and eleven-car formations with lengths of 150 m and 170 m. Knorr-Bremse will deliver brake equipment, air treatment systems and HVAC units, as well as automatic front couplers. Trial operations of the new fleet are scheduled to start in summer 2029.
For the first time, Alstom has ordered Knorr-Bremse’s automatic coupling technology, including AutoLink front couplers and RescueLink adapter couplings. The coupling systems will be produced at Knorr-Bremse’s site in Budapest and are intended to support rapid coupling and rescue operations within the suburban network.
The braking package includes Knorr-Bremse’s CubeControl brake control system, along with brake calipers, magnetic track brakes and sanding systems. AirSupply Smart air treatment systems are also part of the delivery, providing compressed air on demand with reduced noise emissions.
Knorr-Bremse will also supply integrated air conditioning systems for passenger areas and driver’s cabs. The HVAC units use propane as a refrigerant and are designed with heat pump technology and long-life filters.
The Adessia Stream fleet for the Rhine-Ruhr region is planned to comprise up to 90 trains, each offering more than 1,100 seats. The vehicles are designed for high-capacity suburban and regional services and will operate across the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area once introduced into service.
