The Berlin-based company will integrate the six-axle bi-mode locomotive into its operations starting September 2026.

Rail Unit has signed a full-service leasing contract with European Loc Pool (ELP) for one EuroDual locomotive. It will be used across national routes in Germany.

The EuroDual locomotive, built by Stadler, offers up to 6.2 MW of electric power and 2.8 MW of diesel power, with a tractive effort of 500 kN in both modes. It is designed for operation on both electrified and non-electrified tracks and includes remote control and ETCS Baseline 3 as standard.

Rail Unit stated that the technical specifications of the locomotive support independence from external traction providers on non-electrified routes and sidings. The ability to switch between electric and diesel operation without locomotive changes was cited as a key factor in the procurement.

The lease agreement is based on ELP’s full-service model, which includes maintenance and fleet management. ELP’s EuroDual locomotives have been running in Germany since April 2020. The company also operates the Euro9000 type on cross-border corridors.

Founded in 2021, Rail Unit supplies train drivers and other railway personnel, including wagon inspectors and shunting staff. It currently employs over 200 people and works with more than 40 clients across Germany. The company plans to establish itself as a railway undertaking soon.
