Two manufacturers submitted offers for the tender: Newag SA and Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych H. Cegielski (FPS). The final decision to choose Newag was based primarily on their estimated delivery time. Newag promised to deliver the first vehicle within 16 months and the second within 17 months. The manufacturer also pledged to equip the vehicles with an external door to the driver's cab, which was another criterion for selection, according to Mieczysław Struk, Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
The hybrid Newag IMPULS 2 (type 36WEh) trains are expected to be up to 65 meters long, with at least 135 seats and one pair of doors per vehicle segment. The modern traction units will be designed to cater to the needs of people with disabilities, including the transportation of wheelchairs, and will also have space for carrying bicycles. The vehicles will have air-conditioning, internal and external monitoring, access to a wireless Wi-Fi network, a modern passenger information system, and AED defibrillators.
The hybrid trains will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h under catenary and 120 km/h with the use of a combustion engine. The dual-drive system will enable residents to travel comfortably and without transfers, seamlessly connecting areas with diverse railway infrastructure, both with and without the traction network.
The purchase of the four hybrid trains will be co-financed from the Polski Ład, a government program to support economic growth and modernisation, under which the Pomeranian Voivodeship received approximately EUR 14 million for the implementation of the investment.
In 2022, the Pomeranian Voivodship signed a contract for two electric-only Newag IMPULS2 units (with an option for 31 more) following the delivery of ten IMPULS units ordered in 2018. These trains are operated by Polregio and on Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna (PKM).
