Koleje Dolnośląskie has signed a contract with PESA Bydgoszcz for the delivery of ten additional five-car Elf electric multiple units.
The latest contract follows a sequence of tenders that have been awarded to PESA over the past five years. Initially, KD ordered five units with an option for 20 more, all of which are already in passenger service. A second tender led to an order for ten additional trains with an option for ten more. The newest ten units ordered this week form the third batch.
According to KD, the contract value per unit, which includes training and maintenance provided by the manufacturer, is approximately EUR 10.35 million.
All Elf trains in KD’s fleet are co-financed by EU funds under the KPO and FEDŚ programs. The operator has confirmed it will seek further external funding for the newest order.
The vehicles will be produced at PESA’s factory in Bydgoszcz, which is currently also manufacturing 20 units from the 2023 framework agreement and ten diesel multiple units already on order.
Koleje Dolnośląskie operates in Lower Silesia and also runs regional services into the Lubusz, Greater Poland and, from December, the Opole Voivodeship. The operator currently has 40 trains on order—30 electric and ten diesel—with options for another 30 vehicles (10 electric and 20 diesel). Once delivered, the total KD fleet is projected to exceed 120 units.
