From 6 October 2025, ÖBB will begin operating IC double-decker trains on selected Railjet (RJ) connections between Vienna and Salzburg. These interim trains will serve until the arrival of the newly ordered Railjet double-decker trains from Stadler, expected from late 2026.
The IC double-decker trains were recently acquired from Deutsche Bahn and are now being incorporated into ÖBB’s long-distance operations. The change affects RJ services with more frequent stops, while the faster RJX connections will continue using the current Railjet fleet.
Each of the six-car IC double-decker trains offers 486 seats—66 in first class and 420 in second class. The sets include space for bicycles and two wheelchair-accessible areas. Features onboard include barrier-free access, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and luggage storage.
Two new direct evening services between Vienna Airport and Salzburg are being added. Other schedule details such as departure and arrival times, as well as stopping patterns, will remain unchanged. However, affected train numbers will carry new IC designations in ticketing systems; for instance, RJ 643 will become IC 643.
Tickets already purchased remain valid. Seat reservations made prior to the update have been rebooked, and affected passengers have been notified. Travellers without contact information on file are instructed to speak with on-board staff to be assigned new seats.
