The first overhauled Class 72 train has returned from a mid-life upgrade program conducted at Alstom in Sweden. It crossed into Norway for the owner, Norske Tog, on 15 December and will enter a testing phase before operating under Vy.
The unit is part of a series of 36 trains scheduled for modernization. While this initial unit will serve passengers in Eastern Norway, the next one undergoing refurbishment is intended for the Jærbanen line and will be operated by GoAhead Nordic. The overall plan involves updated features aimed at maintaining the fleet’s reliability and keeping pace with passenger requirements.
Inside the vehicle, the interior layout includes a Scandinavian-inspired design with light oak elements, grey textiles, and revised fittings such as new floors, wall panels, seat covers and sliding doors. Additional features include a passenger information system with new displays, as well as USB charging outlets at each seat.
Mechanical checks and maintenance work have also been carried out, including inspection for any structural issues, battery replacements, cable verifications, overhauled traction converters and auxiliary rectifiers, electric door mechanisms, and sanitation system cleanings.
