The service, sponsored by Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois, reflects a solid start for the newly introduced route.

Preliminary data from the first full month of Borealis trains, operated by Amtrak between St. Paul and Chicago, shows over 18,500 riders. This translates to an average of approximately 300 passengers on each of the daily eastbound and westbound trains.

Amtrak’s Vice President of State Supported Service, Ray Lang, noted that the corridor between the Twin Cities, Milwaukee, and Chicago has shown considerable promise. Lang highlighted the initial ridership numbers as an encouraging sign and projected that this trend would likely continue as the service grows, particularly with the onset of the peak summer travel season. He also mentioned the potential for sustained performance due to the route's strong connection to college and university markets, which are expected to see increased travel in the fall.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson emphasized that Borealis represents the first passenger rail service expansion in the state in over two decades. The promising early data reflects the collaborative efforts of WisDOT, its partner states, and Amtrak in establishing this service. Thompson expressed optimism that continued patronage would lead to further success.

Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger echoed this sentiment, underscoring the apparent need for the route as evidenced by the initial ridership figures. She conveyed a positive outlook for the service’s future, emphasizing its role in providing a safe, sustainable, and accessible transportation option.

Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Omer Osman also viewed the first month’s ridership numbers positively, indicating the strong potential for the route and anticipation of continued robust ridership.

Borealis trains depart from St. Paul at midday and from Chicago in the late morning. Amtrak offers various discounts for children, students, seniors, veterans, military personnel, and families, as well as groups. The trains feature Coach and Business Class seating and a café car with regional items. Passengers enjoy amenities such as wide reclining seats, ample legroom, free Wi-Fi, and scenic views of the Mississippi River between St. Paul and La Crosse, Wisconsin, visible during daylight in both directions.
