Metrô BH, the rapid transit system of the third biggest metropolitan area in Brazil is strengthening its fleet.

Belo Horizonte's metro system will get 24 new trains from Chinese manufacturer CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles. This procurement is aimed at improving the urban rail transport services within the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region, with a focus on delivering more consistent and comfortable journeys for passengers across Minas Gerais.

The concessionaire Metrô BH, in charge of operating, modernizing, and expanding the suburban system in the region, has expedited the acquisition process for these new trains. Supported by the Government of Minas Gerais, the company has already commenced the manufacturing phase for these vehicles. The first train is expected to arrive in Brazil by early 2026, with the new fleet anticipated to enter commercial service by the middle of the same year.

These 24 trains, each composed of four cars, will be outfitted with Automatic Train Operation (ATO) technology. This system is designed to improve the regularity and smoothness of travel while also optimizing energy consumption. Onboard, passengers can expect digital monitors that will provide travel information, along with large windows designed to maximize natural lighting. The interior layout is planned to offer more space for passengers, enhancing overall comfort.

The final design of these trains is still under development. CRRC is working on the executive project, which will need approval from Metrô BH. The design is expected to reflect the rich cultural diversity of Minas Gerais, aligning with the region's unique identity.

Once delivered, the new trains will be deployed on both Line 1 and Line 2 of the BH Metro. The current fleet comprises 35 trains: 25 from the 900 series, dating back to the 1980s, and 10 from the 1000 series, which were introduced in 2015 and are equipped with air conditioning and modern systems. The incoming trains are set to replace the older 900 series units, marking a significant upgrade for the metro service.

Metrô BH operates under the Comporte Group, which has a diverse portfolio in metro, road, and urban services, including light rail vehicles. This group manages one of Brazil's largest passenger transport fleets, serving approximately one million customers daily.

The manufacturer, CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles, is a key subsidiary of the CRRC Group, the world's largest rolling stock manufacturer. Headquartered in Beijing, CRRC has around 180,000 employees in 46 companies. The group produces a wide range of high-technology rail vehicles, including high-speed trains, locomotives, and public transport vehicles. Operating in 24 countries, CRRC has already delivered 9,500 vehicles worldwide.
