PKP Intercity has concluded the tender for the acquisition of 35 hybrid multiple units. Newag, the sole bidder, secured the contract with a gross offer of EUR 739.52 million.
This contract aligns with PKP Intercity’s objective to diversify its rolling stock. Currently, the carrier operates nearly 90 electric multiple units. The introduction of these hybrid units is intended to improve passenger comfort and optimize operational costs, particularly on non-electrified routes.
Each hybrid trainset will have a capacity for 178 passengers, with 154 seats in second class and 20 in first class. The trains will include provisions for passengers with disabilities, with four designated seats and facilities for their guardians. Additionally, the trains will feature eight bicycle racks and vending machines for on-board refreshments.
The hybrid units are expected to serve domestic InterCity routes, aiming to reduce travel times for trains currently operated by electric and diesel locomotives. These units will be equipped with the ETCS safety system and engines that meet the latest emission standards.
The first two units are scheduled for delivery 30 months after the contract signing. Maintenance for the vehicles is guaranteed for 10 years, with participation from PKP Intercity’s own staff. The company is also exploring solutions to ensure appropriate maintenance facilities for these new trains.
