The operation is overseen by the Ministry of National Defense and forms part of the federal government’s plan to expand the railway’s role beyond passenger services.
The freight operation is powered by a fleet of Wabtec ES44AC locomotives rated at 4,500 hp. The locomotives, identified as TMY 2004, 2005 and 2006, have been deployed for coupling manoeuvres and initial positioning of intermodal platforms.
The freight trains are equipped with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), enabling operation alongside the existing passenger infrastructure. The integration is intended to allow coordinated use of the line while maintaining common safety standards.
Test runs are being carried out at night on the section leading to Tenosique. The movements include the placement of the first platforms that will support the launch of regular freight services.
The Maya Train project spans the Yucatán Peninsula and was developed primarily as a passenger railway. The introduction of freight services adds a logistics function to the corridor, connecting industrial sites and ports in southeast Mexico.
