Rail Cargo Hungaria (RCH) completed Hungary’s 2025 rail sugar beet transport campaign significantly faster than planned, despite a delayed harvest and ongoing infrastructure works.
The harvest started later than usual due to weather conditions, requiring an intensive logistics operation with tight deadlines. From 1 October 2025, RCH transported between 4,000 and 4,300 tonnes of sugar beet per day to Kaposvár from 30 loading stations across Hungary.
The operation involved around 100 staff coordinating planning, train operations and on-site handling. Rail Cargo Hungaria said the volume was maintained despite capacity constraints caused by track renewal works on parts of the Hungarian rail network.
In total, RCH moved 311,000 tonnes of sugar beet, operating 6,479 wagons over approximately 62,000 train-kilometres on the domestic network. The flows supplied the Kaposvár sugar factory and covered production areas across multiple regions of the country.
Rail Cargo Hungaria is the leading rail freight operator in Hungary and regularly handles seasonal agricultural traffic, including sugar beet campaigns, which place high demands on rolling stock availability and timetable coordination.
