From September 2025, Buzzi Unicem has begun using a new rail connection operated by Mercitalia Rail (part of FS Logistix) to move slag from the port of Savona to its plant in Trino. The link, established in cooperation with FHP Group Holding — following its acquisition of a majority stake in the former BuT terminal, now operating as FHP Terminal Savona — permits trains to carry over 900 tonnes per convoy.
On arrival in Trino, container unloading is performed by SEA Autotrasporti, which uses road vehicles running exclusively on HVO‑derived biofuel. According to Buzzi Unicem, the shift to rail reduces the equivalent of approximately 30 heavy‑goods traffic movements on local roads per week.
To handle the bulk slag efficiently, 40 units of 20‑foot Bulk Carrier Hard Top containers have been provided by Sicom SpA. These containers are designed for top loading and gravity‑fed rear discharge. Their removable roofs can be handled with a forklift, removing the need for manual load access and streamlining wagon loading, particularly for full trains.
To support unloading of the incoming slag trains, Buzzi Unicem has leased a 35‑tonne forklift from Gruppo Selini — reportedly the first such machine in the company’s history. The forklift will be used at the Trino plant to handle containers arriving by rail from Savona.
