UPM Communication Papers has launched a new rail logistics system in cooperation with Rail Cargo Group (RCG), focusing on its operations in southern Germany.
RCG, a subsidiary of ÖBB and active across Europe, manages daily coordination of inbound raw materials and outbound paper shipments. The service includes wagon management, load securing, and integration with local operators such as Augsburger Localbahn, which handle first- and last-mile connections.
UPM states that the use of block trains shortens transit times and increases supply chain predictability compared with the previous system. The approach also standardises loading and unloading processes through consistent wagon availability.
According to the company, one round trip by block train between North Rhine-Westphalia and Augsburg replaces around 60 truck journeys and avoids more than 60 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. UPM plans to extend the concept to additional inbound flows, storage facilities, and international routes from France and Italy. The collaboration also includes the deployment of hybrid locomotives.
The project is linked to UPM’s goal of cutting Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030.
