Freight volumes by rail grew by a fifth in the first two months of 2025.

A record number of trains passed through the Altynkol-Khorgas border crossing, following agreements between railway administrations in Kazakhstan and China. The daily exchange of trains, which previously did not exceed eight, has increased to support the transportation of various cargo types, including grain products, ore, and ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Rail freight volumes between Kazakhstan and China have been on the rise. In the first two months of 2025, the total volume of cargo transported to China reached 3.4 million tons, an 18% increase compared to the previous year. This includes 2.2 million tons moved via Dostyk-Alashankou, a 10% increase, and 1.2 million tons via Altynkol-Khorgas, reflecting a 37% rise.

Further capacity expansion is scheduled for July 1, 2025, when the number of trains passing through the Dostyk-Alashankou border crossing is set to increase from 14 to 28 per day. The higher frequency of train movements is expected to accommodate growing demand for exports from Kazakhstan and maintain the flow of goods between the two countries.
