Progress Rail has signed an agreement with Norfolk Southern (NS) to modernize 96 EMD SD70M-2 locomotives into SD70ICC units equipped with AC traction technology. Deliveries will begin in 2027 and conclude in 2029.
The program converts the existing DC traction SD70M-2 fleet to Progress Rail’s AC traction platform using its Individual Axle Control (IAC) system. According to the companies, three SD70ICC locomotives will be capable of handling the same tonnage as four legacy SD70M-2 units, reducing the number of locomotives required per train.
Each SD70ICC will be fitted with a remanufactured EMD 16-cylinder 710 engine rated at 4,300 hp, updated control systems and Caterpillar Advanced Diesel Engine Management (ADEM). The AC traction conversion is designed to improve adhesion and performance, particularly in demanding operating conditions, while reducing unscheduled traction motor maintenance compared with DC systems.
Standardizing on the IAC AC traction platform is intended to simplify fleet management and maintenance across the operator’s locomotive portfolio.
Norfolk Southern operates one of the largest freight rail networks in the United States, with SD70M-2 locomotives forming part of its mainline road fleet. Progress Rail, a Caterpillar subsidiary, manufactures and remanufactures EMD locomotives and provides locomotive modernization programs for North American freight operators.
