Three passengers were left trapped in the wreckage following the crash near Rožňava. This information was provided by Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok.
The minister indicated that a preliminary investigation points to human error by one of the train drivers as the likely cause. The national carrier Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) stated that the accident occurred at a point where double-track sections merge into a single line.
Footage from the scene shows several derailed passenger cars near a railway tunnel and significant damage to at least one locomotive. Police confirmed that both trains were carrying numerous passengers when they collided head-on. The affected line connects Košice with Zvolen in central Slovakia. (watch the video here)
