The first three Newag Impuls 2 electric multiple units have entered service with Koleje Śląskie, operating in the Silesian region. The new four-car sets, delivered by Newag, are part of a broader order placed by the Silesian Voivodeship and the regional operator.
As part of the delivery process, Koleje Śląskie has exercised an option to procure an additional two trainsets. The total number of Impuls 2 units now on order includes 26 financed by the Silesian Voivodeship and five acquired directly by Koleje Śląskie. The newly ordered trains are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025.
Each Impuls 2 set provides seating for 192 passengers, with an overall capacity of 400, including standing areas. The design includes a designated bicycle zone accommodating up to 10 bicycles and a family area featuring an interactive educational game with a regional theme. The trains are equipped with accessibility features, including induction loops for passengers with hearing impairments and multilingual passenger information systems. The lighting system uses LED technology to optimize energy consumption.
The units are designed for regional services with a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h. They are expected to be deployed on routes connecting key urban centers within the region. Currently, the first three trains are operating on the S7 route between Katowice and Racibórz, as well as the S71 route linking Katowice with Bohumín.
The contract for the 26 trains ordered by the Silesian Voivodeship has a total value of nearly EUR 314 million, with partial funding from the European Union's "European Funds for Silesia 2021-2027" program. According to the delivery schedule, the first two additional units are planned to arrive by the end of July 2025, with further deliveries continuing into 2027.
The new fleet is expected to replace older rolling stock and support the development of regional services. Koleje Śląskie reported a passenger volume of nearly 22 million for the second consecutive year, reflecting continued demand for regional rail transport in Silesia.
