Set to be the first of its kind in the United States, Brightline West will connect Southern California to Las Vegas with trains reaching speeds of over 200 miles per hour.

The $3 billion grant agreement awarded to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) for Brightline West was officially signed by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). In December 2023, President Biden announced the federal-state partnership for passenger railroad grants at a ceremony in Las Vegas, and in April, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke at the Brightline West groundbreaking. Brightline West, with trains travelling at over 200 miles per hour, will be America's first true high-speed rail project, connecting Southern California with Las Vegas.

The grant signing was hailed by several federal, state and local elected officials. This grant provides the crucial funding needed to make the rail system, which would drastically reduce travel time between Las Vegas and Southern California, the fastest, most efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to road and air travel.

“This is a historic commitment that will jumpstart the high-speed rail industry in America, creating thousands of jobs all across the country,” said Michael Reininger, CEO of Brightline. “Brightline West will be American made and American built, and will serve as the blueprint for connecting city pairs that are too close to fly but too far to drive.”

By reducing congestion on Interstate 15, taking three million cars off the road, and eliminating more than 400,000 tonnes of emissions annually, the project is expected to have significant environmental benefits. Brightline West is expected to become the greenest mode of transportation in America with its all-electric, zero-emission trains.

Brightline West is scheduled to begin operating in 2028. When completed, the high-speed rail line will provide passengers with a seamless, comfortable journey between Las Vegas and Southern California. It will reduce travel time to two hours.
