The Bavarian Railway Company (Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft - BEG) has given the green light for the extension of the airport express to Nuremberg, starting in December.

This service will offer direct trains between Nuremberg Central Station and Munich Airport every two hours, a first for Bavarian regional transport with two operators, Agilis and DB Regio, sharing the route.

The extension aims to improve rail connectivity for passengers traveling to Munich Airport. The new service will also benefit the greater Nuremberg area and western Upper Palatinate, with additional stops in Neumarkt, Parsberg, and Beratzhausen. Additionally, regions like Freising, Moosburg, Landshut, and western Lower Bavaria will gain a direct link to Nuremberg.

The RE 50 service between Nuremberg and Regensburg, operated hourly by Agilis from December 2024, will connect every two hours with the airport express RE 22, run by DB Regio. During the off-hours, the “Flugfhafenexpress” (airport express) will continue its current route between Regensburg and Munich Airport, while the new RE 50 will operate between Nuremberg and Plattling. The total travel time between Nuremberg and Munich Airport will be approximately two and a half hours.

Future services on the Nuremberg – Munich Airport line will see increased capacity with the introduction of two coupled electric units, compared to a single one currently in use. This change will increase seating capacity from a maximum of 219 seats to up to 528 seats on the Regensburg – Munich Airport line. Both Agilis and DB Regio will deploy the same vehicle model, Siemens’ four-car Mireo electric multiple units, on this new direct route.

Improving the rail link to Munich Airport remains a priority for Bavarian transport policy. The long-term strategy includes developing interregional airport express trains and making long-distance train connections better. The extension to Nuremberg represents the first stage in a four-stage plan devised by the state to improve the airport's rail accessibility. Currently, about one-third of passengers and employees at Munich Airport use rail transport, and the goal is to gradually increase this percentage.
