The acquisition, completed on September 2, 2024, signals a shift in the UK’s logistics landscape, particularly for the rail freight sector where both companies have established a significant presence.

Maritime Group Limited, a leading UK logistics provider, has been acquired by Swiss-based global logistics company MEDLOG.

Maritime has grown over the past 23 years to become a key player in the UK’s logistics industry, with a network of 41 sites and a workforce of 3,000 employees. The company’s operations span a wide range of services, including container transport, domestic distribution, and rail freight logistics. The integration of Maritime into MEDLOG's global operations is expected to strengthen its position in the UK market, particularly in intermodal transportation—a core focus for both companies.

MEDLOG, which operates in over 80 countries, brings extensive experience in intermodal logistics, a sector that increasingly relies on efficient rail connections to optimize supply chains. The acquisition aligns with MEDLOG’s strategy to enhance its logistics footprint in the UK, leveraging Maritime’s established infrastructure and expertise in rail and road freight.

The impact on the rail sector is likely to be significant. Maritime’s rail terminals, which operate on an open-access basis, will continue to play a crucial role in the company's logistics strategy. With the backing of MEDLOG, further investment in rail infrastructure is anticipated, supporting the ongoing shift towards sustainable transport solutions. This includes the planned introduction of battery-electric trucks, which will complement the rail operations and contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of logistics activities.

Maritime’s management team, led by Executive Chairman John Williams, will remain in place, ensuring continuity in operations while benefiting from MEDLOG’s investment and global reach. The acquisition is poised to enhance the capabilities of both companies, particularly in the development of technology-driven and infrastructure-led logistics solutions that meet the evolving needs of the UK market.

As MEDLOG expands its operations in the UK through this acquisition, the rail freight sector stands to benefit from increased investment and innovation, potentially leading to more efficient and sustainable supply chain solutions across the country.
