Two key Czech rail organisations are expected to appoint permanent leadership in the coming weeks, ending a prolonged power vacuum. The changes affect both rail infrastructure and state-owned freight operations.

According to Czech transport daily zdopravy.cz, the Czech railway sector is expected to see leadership changes at two critical state-owned organisations: infrastructure manager Správa železnic and freight operator ČD Cargo. The appointments would end months of interim management at both entities.

The absence of permanent executives has created a power vacuum at the top of the Czech rail system, at a time when both infrastructure management and rail freight face capacity constraints, major investment programmes and declining freight performance across parts of Central Europe.

Zdopravy.cz reports that the names of expected senior appointees have been confirmed by several independent sources. Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik has declined to comment on individual nominations, stating only that formal rules and timelines must be respected.

The CEO position at Správa železnic has been vacant since last year, when the supervisory board dismissed Jiří Svoboda. At ČD Cargo, the company has been led on an interim basis following the resignation of its former chief executive. Both organisations have therefore been operating without permanent leadership for several months.

According to the same source, changes are also expected at the supervisory board of Správa železnic, with a broad reshuffle anticipated. New board members are expected to include figures with long-standing experience in rail and transport policy, alongside political nominees, in line with governance practices at state-owned companies.

Stabilising leadership at both Správa železnic and ČD Cargo is widely seen as a prerequisite for addressing longer-term challenges, including large-scale infrastructure renewals, coordination of network works, and efforts to restore the competitiveness of rail freight. Bednárik has previously identified rail freight recovery as one of his priorities as transport minister.
