The main benefit for travellers seems to be easier booking: customers receive a combined ticket for train and air travel, including seat reservation, in a single booking process with the participating airline, Theo Panagiotoulias, CEO Star Alliance explains:
"Air and rail travel have been complementing each other worldwide for several years. We are proud to welcome Austrian Federal Railways to the Star Alliance family. With a single ticket, customers can now travel from Singapore to Salzburg, changing to a Railjet at Vienna Airport. I am confident that this partnership will not only offer more choice but also improve the seamless customer journey."
Travellers can check in online or in person at one of the ÖBB Travel Centres in Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck:
"From the main train stations in these four cities it will be even easier to travel all over the world in the future. This means that rail journeys can be integrated even more flexibly into air travel, and not just with one airline group, but with a global network of 25 airlines," adds Andreas Matthä, CEO ÖBB.
Austrian Airlines and ÖBB intend to further expand their joint AIRail services on the basis of current figures: in 2024, 3.1 million passengers used the Railjet to travel to and from Vienna Airport.
