The deal, announced in February, was cleared by the Swedish antitrust authorities. Integrating MTRX into VR's long-distance operations will begin immediately, and trains on the Stockholm-Gothenburg route will start running under the VR brand in the autumn.
"The market for commercial long-distance transport in Sweden is about twice the size of that in Finland, and the share of rail transport in total passenger transport is even twice as high as in Finland. I believe that this acquisition will enable us to achieve profitable growth in a competitive market where customer experience is a competitive advantage. I also welcome the employees of MTRX to VR - together we will create even better services and travel experiences for rail travellers in the Nordic region," says Elisa Markula, CEO of VR.
MTRX has been operating commercial open-access services between Stockholm and Gothenburg since 2015. The company operates with six Stadler FLIRT trains and provides 126 services per week, which is more than a third of all services on the route. MTRX's revenue in 2022 was approximately MSEK 350.
