The train, organized by Network Rail and Chiltern Railways, reconnected Oxford and Milton Keynes.

A test train successfully completed a journey between Oxford and Milton Keynes this week, signaling progress on the East West Rail project.

Network Rail, in collaboration with Chiltern Railways, operated the first train over the rebuilt section between Bicester and Bletchley. Departing Oxford station, the Chiltern Class 168 train traveled via Bicester, Winslow, and Bletchley, arriving at Milton Keynes Central. The 42-minute journey saw the train reaching speeds up to 160 km/h on several stretches.

This operation marks the first time in nearly 60 years that a train has traversed this section of the line. The East West Rail Project’s Connection Stage One aims to reintroduce passenger services from Oxford to Bletchley and Milton Keynes, with operations expected to commence in 2025.

Chiltern Railways is supporting Network Rail and the East West Rail Alliance—a partnership involving AtkinsRéalis, Laing O'Rourke, VolkerRail, and Network Rail—by running test trains as part of technical preparations. Ongoing testing and training over the coming months will focus on ensuring the safety and reliability of the new infrastructure.
