Stadler has withdrawn its appeal against SBB’s double-deck train contract award to Siemens, bringing the dispute to a close.

Stadler has withdrawn its appeal against the SBB contract award for up to 200 double-deck trains, formally ending a high-profile procurement dispute with Siemens.

The Swiss manufacturer had challenged the tender outcome at the Federal Administrative Court, seeking an independent review of the decision. The appeal has now been withdrawn as of 7 April 2026.

According to Stadler, documents provided during the proceedings were heavily redacted, limiting transparency around the evaluation process. While the company gained partial insight, it said key elements of the decision remained inaccessible.

At the same time, the available information indicated that SBB exercised its discretion in favour of Siemens, selecting a train platform described as a new and not yet proven model.

Stadler had offered a double-deck train already in operation, with more than 150 units in service, positioning it as a lower-risk alternative from an operational perspective.

“While we continue to regret the decision, we must accept it based on the information available,” said Chairman Peter Spuhler, adding that the company will now focus on its ongoing cooperation with SBB.

The case had drawn attention across the European rail sector, highlighting questions around procurement transparency, risk assessment and innovation in large rolling stock tenders.

With the appeal now withdrawn, the contract process moves forward, closing one of the most closely watched rail procurements in Switzerland in recent months.
