A new breakwater will be built over a length of 320 m, with the track about 20 m from the seafront.

This action, which represents an investment of almost 2.8 million euros, is intended to avoid episodes such as the one that occurred on 27 March, when the ground next to the railway platform shifted, which led to the interruption of rail traffic for safety reasons for 24 hours.

This episode was due to continuous storms that have progressively eroded the beach terrain and the breakwater protection itself. This breakwater has been disappearing with the consequent erosion of the platform until it reached the limit of the track, as occurred on 13 March when the waves reached their most significant height (3.8 m).

At that time, Adif technicians intervened with the utmost agility to carry out a provisional action by protecting the infrastructure with a breakwater.

After this first intervention, Adif has carried out a technical campaign to inspect the conditions of the coastal dynamics on the beach and has designed a project to carry out a larger and definitive action, similar to the one carried out between Mataró and Cabrera de Mar. This section, located on the same line, has not been affected since the completion of the new line of the protective breakwater.

This action will guarantee the structural stability of the terrain and the embankment at all times and increase the protection of the trackbed, without any risk to the safety of railway operation in a particularly sensitive section, given that the line runs parallel to the coastal boundary.

The works are being carried out on a section of approximately 320 m, where the track will be between 17 m and 20 m from the edge of the breakwater slope. In the first 160 m, work has begun on the construction of a new breakwater protection dyke. In this section, two layers of stone with a weight of 4 to 5.5 T have been designed, supported by two layers of smaller stone (0.2 to 0.25 T) with a filtering function, forming a single core that rests in turn on the seabed.

Meanwhile, in the other 160 m, the foot of the existing protection dyke, which was affected by the storm, will be reinforced by placing a breakwater with similar characteristics to the previous one to avoid possible wear and tear in future storm episodes.

Moreover, during the execution of the works, the railway platform will be monitored to control its stability conditions at all times.

These works, with an estimated completion period of six months, are being carried out without affecting rail traffic on a line with a high volume of traffic.
